At least 20,000 people in Gaza have been displaced from their homes and are sheltering in dozens of schools and emergency shelters, according to the United Nations' humanitarian affairs office.
The coastal strip is home to more than two million people.
They have virtually no way out, despite a warning by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for Palestinian civilians in Gaza to “leave now” because the Israeli military was going to “turn all Hamas hiding places into rubble.”
